A hazardous materials incident in Newport Beach drew a large emergency response Monday afternoon, forcing street closures and prompting officials to urge residents to stay indoors.

The situation began shortly after 2:18 p.m., when Newport Beach fire and police personnel responded to a medical emergency at 418 Carnation Avenue, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department in an Instagram post. When firefighters entered the property, they discovered what officials described as a “hazardous materials situation” involving mixed chemicals inside a garage.

With the potential danger unclear, fire officials requested mutual aid. Hazardous materials teams from Huntington Beach Fire and Anaheim Fire & Rescue joined Newport Beach crews on scene to assess and neutralize the chemical threat.

While responders worked, Newport Beach police closed Carnation Avenue between Coast Highway and Bayside Drive, as well as the stretch of First Avenue between Begonia and Dahlia streets, the department announced in a 3:19 p.m. post on X. Officers urged people in the area to stay inside their homes and for others to avoid the neighborhood altogether.

Amid the emergency response, firefighters rescued one individual from the third floor of the structure along with a dog, both of whom were reported in stable condition. A second patient was taken to a hospital, also in stable condition, according to the Fire Department.

By late afternoon, multiple agencies remained at the scene working to safely mitigate the hazard. Authorities warned residents to expect a continued emergency services presence in the neighborhood for several hours.

“We thank the public for their cooperation and patience as we work to ensure the safety of everyone in the community,” Newport Beach Fire Department officials said in their post.
