North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick has long been known for his icy relationship with the media. Throughout his 24-year tenure with the New England Patriots, Belichick became synonymous with brief, terse answers in press conferences and refusing to give reporters detailed information.

Anyone remember his infamous “on to Cincinnati” presser?

Well, not surprisingly, Belichick is bringing that same attitude to Chapel Hill. With North Carolina set to play its season opener against the TCU Horned Frogs on Monday night, Belichick decided to aggravate the media yet again. How? By leaving everyone in the dark when it comes to the Tar Heels’ depth chart.

Ah, classic Bill.

To be fair, Belichick is not obligated to share that information, especially considering that it can be used against him later on. And let’s be real here: no one who covers North Carolina — or TCU, for that matter — should be shocked that Belichick has decided to go this route.

The 73-year-old surprisingly accepted the Tar Heels head-coaching job over the winter, representing Belichick’s first foray into the NCAA landscape.

Just about everyone has wondered how Belichick’s style will translate onto the collegiate level, especially considering his customary militant attitude when it came to coaching in the NFL.

One thing is for sure, though: Belichick has put North Carolina football on the map. While the Tar Heels haven’t historically been terrible on the gridiron, they certainly haven’t been great, and football has always lived in the shadow of hoops at Chapel Hill. But perhaps that’s changing.

The fact that North Carolina is getting a primetime game to start its season is concrete evidence of the Belichick effect, and we have already seen the Tar Heels making more noise on the recruiting trail.

We’ll see if Belichick is able to lift North Carolina to prominence in the ACC.
