Heat Blockbuster Trade Idea Ships Out Tyler Herro to East Rival

There’s a chance the Miami Heat could part ways with All-Star guard Tyler Herro, and Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley explains why.

“The Heat have essentially acknowledged they need more,” Buckley writes. “After the season wrapped, team president Pat Riley told reporters: ‘There’s no doubt there has to be some change.’ Chances are, Riley was referring to more than just a deeply discounted deal for Norman Powell.”

Herro played a big role for the Heat last season, but it seems Miami is looking for its next generational star. If that is the case, the guard could be a strong second option for another team.

“They need a difference-maker—a “whale” in Riley’s parlance—and Powell isn’t that. Maybe Miami doesn’t think Herro has that level in him, either,” Buckley added. “Or Jović, for that matter. And maybe the Heat take things further and believe big-dollar extensions to both would hinder their efforts of finding that elite player down the line.

“The wise move, then, would be to cash in the trade chips now in hopes of hitting it big later.”

And so, Buckley proposes the Heat trade Herro and Nikola Jović to the Detroit Pistons.

“Detroit Pistons receive: Tyler Herro and Nikola Jović

“Miami Heat receive: Tobias Harris, Ron Holland II, a 2026 first-round pick (lottery-protected), a 2030 first-round pick and a 2031 first-round pick swap (top-three protected).”

Herro could pair well with Pistons star Cade Cunningham, as the two could make a strong duo in Detroit.

There isn’t a clearcut superteam in the NBA currently, and there’s much ambiguity as to who will dominate in the 2025-26 especially in the Eastern Conference. Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers acknowledged this was the case in July.

“I don’t think the NBA has been more open to anybody winning a title in 20 years,” Rivers said. “Seven new champions in a row. There’s no Bulls team right now. Now, Oklahoma scares the hell out of you because they could become that.

“But there’s no dynasty team right now. And so each year, if you are a good team, you actually literally have a chance to win. And so there’s gonna be a team this year, I guarantee you, that we don’t know right now that’s gonna be in the thick of things.”

The Detroit Pistons could very well be that surprise team if the organization can make a few more key additions. Therefore, adding an All-Star guard like Herro could be a crucial move for Detroit.

While giving up multiple firsts would be a lot, now is the perfect time for Detroit to go all-in with the Eastern Conference wide open.
