The Boston Red Sox made a trade with the New York Mets, acquiring catcher Ali Sanchez in exchange for cash considerations.

On Monday, when rosters expanded to 28, Sanchez was called up by the Red Sox along with right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly. Infielder Marcelo Mayer was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Sanchez, 28, signed a minor league deal with the Mets in late August after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier in the month. Now, he’s back in Boston as a third catcher on the active roster alongside Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong.

Sanchez has bounced around the league this season, spending time with three different organizations in the Red Sox, Mets and Toronto Blue Jays.

He began the season in Toronto, appearing in eight games at the MLB level and going 5-for-21 with two doubles and an OPS of .571.

He was then designated for assignment by the Blue Jays in early August and claimed off waivers by the Red Sox. He appeared in one game for Boston, going 0-for-1 at the plate.

After being designated for assignment by Boston, he joined the Mets, where he made three appearances at Triple-A, going 2-for-11. Now, he’s back in Boston, acting as the team’s third catcher.

Sanchez’s career began back in 2013 when he signed with the Mets as an international free agent at 16 years old.

He worked his way up through the minor leagues before making his MLB debut in 2020, but was designated for assignment in February 2021 and subsequently traded to the St. Louis Cardinals.

He appeared in two games with St. Louis at the MLB level before bouncing around multiple organizations. He spent time with the Detroit Tigers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs, but didn’t receive a major league opportunity. His next one came in 2024 with the Miami Marlins, when he played in a career-high 31 games, hitting .167 with an OPS of .402.

Across his four-season career, Sanchez is slashing .185/.222/.235 with zero home runs, four runs batted in and an OPS of .458. He’ll provide depth to the Red Sox, as their catchers have combined for an OPS of just .652 this year, which is ranked 21st in all of MLB.
