The best and worst looks from the 2025 amfAR Venezia gala

There was no shortage of glitz and glam at the 2025 amfAR Venezia gala.

The annual gala, which takes place during the Venice Film Festival, raises money for the Foundation for AIDS Research. Colman Domingo hosted the 2025 Gala on Sunday at the Arsenale, and a slew of stars from all over the world attended the benefit.

Many A-list attendees, including Halsey, Laura Harrier, and Jude Law, walked the amfAR red carpet in high-fashion looks.

However, some stars missed the mark with their outfits, wearing suits that didn’t fit well or poorly accessorizing their gowns.

Here are the best and worst looks from the gala.

Colman Domingo’s green jacket popped on the red carpet.

Domingo served as the host for the gala, and he came dressed to impress for the role in a custom Maison Valentino look designed by Alessandro Michele.

The star of Domingo’s ensemble was a floral-patterned green jacket with a belt at the waist. The garment’s mandarin collar was accented by black flowers embroidered on the neckline, contrasting with the silver buttons that lined the rest of the jacket.

Fitted black pants and black shoes completed the outfit.

Laura Harrier’s black gown was simple and elegant.

Miu Miu designed Harrier’s silky, sheath gown.

The dress had a relaxed fit aside from the neckline, which featured an exposed bustier. Bedazzled spaghetti straps brought a pop of sparkle to the look, which Harrier played up with an updo, diamond stud earrings, and a coordinating ring.

The outfit was understated and effortlessly stylish.

Jesse Williams’ suit was fashionable, but it could have been styled better.

Williams walked the amfAR red carpet in a black suit. A subtle flower pattern adorned the jacket for a fresh take on menswear, and Williams added a crystal brooch to his lapel.

However, Williams wore the jacket with no tie, which would have been fine, but he didn’t button the collar of his white shirt either. The neckline ended up looking more haphazard than intentionally relaxed, and his pants scrunched on the bottom in an almost distracting way.

If he had better arranged his collar and hemmed the bottom of his pants a bit, Williams’ look would have been stronger.

Paris Jackson looked ethereal in her ombre gown.

Jackson donned Iris van Herpen’s Harmonia cape dress for the amfAR gala.

Made of an ombre fabric that flowed from yellow and brown to shades of purple, the gown’s flowy sleeves floated around Jackson to blend with the full skirt and create a cape.

The pleats of fabric making up the dress were disrupted by a triangular cutout on the bodice, accenting a vertical tattoo lining Jackson’s torso. Feathered earrings and a messy updo tied the whimsical outfit together.

Lace and transparent detailing stood out on Halsey’s gown.

See-through looks can often be overdone on red carpets, but Halsey’s blue gown offered a fresh take on the trend.

Designed by Erik Charlotte, the strapless dress had a cream corset bodice adorned with navy lace. The dropped-waist skirt was made of the same lace, though it had no cream backing, revealing peeks of Halsey’s legs.

A feathered bow sat on one side of the skirt for a playful addition to the look, which Halsey balanced with crystal jewelry that ensured the outfit stayed elevated.

Sofia Resing, a Brazilian model, also wore a semi-sheer dress, but hers missed the mark.

Resing’s yellow Elie Saab gown had a ruched skirt that spilled into a split train and a high neckline that mimicked the shape of a scarf. She also carried a playful, fuzzy purse.

The bodice of Resing’s dress was mostly sheer, aside from a triangular panel of fabric. The visibly transparent fabric — particularly between the neckline and bodice — distracted from the more high-fashion elements of the look.

The dress might have worked better if it had sheer cutouts only on the side of the garment, rather than the top of the bodice, too.

Singer Ava Max’s red dress looked a bit dated.

Max arrived at the gala in a red ball gown with a low, strapless neckline and a full skirt that gathered on one side with ruching. The skirt revealed Max’s platform black heels, and she wore a diamond necklace and her hair down.

The combination of the dramatic gown and platform heels evoked the early 2000s, but rather than creating a vintage feel, the outfit just felt a bit dated.

Max could have leaned into the glamour of the look with less harsh shoes or a more sophisticated hairstyle, or she could have played up the mix-and-match of styles with funkier accessories. She would have been better off leaning in one way or the other.

Sofia Carson’s floor-length dress was dripping in crystal embroidery.

The “My Oxford Year” star walked the amfAR red carpet in a blush gown designed by Elie Saab that was full of drama.

The off-the-shoulder long sleeves had a puff of fabric at the top that contrasted with the corset bodice, and the entire dress was covered in floral and crystal embroidery.

The gown easily could have overtaken the star since it was full of such intricate detailing, but Carson ensured it didn’t become too much by wearing her hair up and forgoing a necklace. Her crystal dangly earrings also perfectly matched the tone of the look.

The flowers on content creator Thassia Naves’ dress were fun, but the rest of the dress struck the wrong tone.

The Gucci gown Naves selected for the gala had an intricate bodice, with layers of white fabric adorned with silver embroidery and trimmed with black lace floating over her chest. A peplum of the same shape sat on her waistline before flowing into a black, column skirt.

For a pop of color, three-dimensional pink rosettes accessorized each of Naves’ shoulders, and she wore her hair in a slick bun.

Overall, the dress looked ill-fitting, as the fabric on the bodice seemed to swallow Naves, particularly paired with the dark skirt. The dress might have worked better if it had a shorter skirt or if Naves had paired it with accessories that could have made the look feel more playful.

Jude Law’s white tuxedo jacket exuded Hollywood glamour.

Law opted to wear a white tuxedo jacket with black trousers and a black bow tie to the amfAR gala. His lapels had a subtle sheen.

The outfit was stylish, well-fitted, and slightly unexpected, working for Law on the red carpet.

The mix of fabrics on model Victoria Bonya’s gown was a bit overwhelming.

Designed by Aysina, the Russian model’s black dress had a black halter bodysuit as its base. The gown was overlaid with a sparkly, sheer chainmail fabric in the front, while the sides were totally sheer, and the back was made of a silky black fabric. Small strips of fabric popped off the sides of the bodice, and it had a daring slit on one side of the skirt.

The dress had some fun elements, but it was ultimately just too busy with all the different fabrics. It would have been a more successful red carpet look if there had been just one fabric or fewer sheer elements.

Architectural ruching elevated content creator Carina Zavline’s white dress.

DATT designed Zavline’s cream dress, which had a halter neckline that dipped low. It featured asymmetrical, scalloped ruching along the bodice and skirt, elongating the look.

The dress had a vintage flair, which Zavline played up with an updo. It was a chic look for the amfAR gala.
