As an actor who’s seen both sides of the aisle — the MCU and DCU — Frank Grillo is comparing how the two powerhouse superhero studios, Marvel and DC Studios, approach their sprawling multiverses.

In an interview with People, the Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Peacemaker cast member noted that the two companies have “different” approaches to their filmmaking and ideating.

“It’s different. It’s not organized in the same way. [DC] is really like all the scripts are in front of you and you kind of have a real secure handle on what’s happening,” Grillo said.

The Tulsa King actor added, “And there’s nothing wrong with it, but [Marvel] was a little fly by the seat of your pants.” While Grillo noted the studio has “done very well,” he personally found it a “little scary” to be going into a scene dark — something fellow Marvel alums have shared, with stars like Alan Cumming and Gwyneth Paltrow noting the confusion that can set in when acting alongside green screens and amid script rewrites, as well as character or plot elements that are kept under-wraps even from the stars themselves. (For his part, Superman helmer James Gunn said in an interview earlier this year that the movie industry is “dying” because “people are making movies without a finished screenplay.”)

In December, Grillo expressed similar sentiments, telling Entertainment Weekly: “They’re very different. Marvel’s a different machine, and it’s great in its own right, but the thing I love about James’s and Peter [Safran’s] DC is that it’s much more contained. It’s so much more personal, and I really enjoy it better. I just love being part of something in the embryonic stage and being able to grow with it and watch it and flourish.”

Grillo portrayed Brock Rumlow (aka Crossbones) across the MCU in projects like The Winter Soldier, Civil War and Endgame. He joined Season 2 of Peacemaker, currently airing weekly on HBO Max, reprising his role as Rick Flag Sr., the character he voiced in the animated series Creature Commandos.
