The Kansas City Chiefs are obviously set at quarterback for the long haul as long as Patrick Mahomes is healthy, so whichever other signal-callers they acquire over the next decade or so will almost surely just be backups.

But are there are any particularly intriguing No. 2 quarterbacks that the Chiefs could potentially pursue in the near future?

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff has floated Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson as a possibility, noting that an offensive-minded coach like Andy Reid might be able to fix him.

“I think Richardson is in play for all the good, sweet offensive coaches,” Middlekauff said. “Sean Payton would not be interested because he’s got a young quarterback. But Andy Reid, obviously Sean McVay. … The first two names that came to my mind were Reid and McVay.”

Richardson lost his starting job to Daniel Jones in training camp, likely spelling the end of his brief tenure in Indianapolis.

The Colts selected Richardson with the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, and while Richardson showed some promise early on, injuries limited him to just four games during his rookie campaign.

Then, last year, the University of Florida product threw for 1,814 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 47.7 percent of his passes and posting a 61.6 passer rating in 10 starts.

Obviously, it wasn’t a very impressive campaign for Richardson, but given that he is still just 22 years old and clearly talented, perhaps a change of scenery would do him some good.

Right now, there probably aren’t any teams in the league that would view Richardson as a starter, so it might actually be best for him to go to a club like the Chiefs, learn under Reid and Mahomes for a year or two and then potentially land a starting job elsewhere.

Either way, it’s going to be an uphill battle for Richardson moving forward.
