Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani sustained several injuries including a spinal fracture in a car accident Saturday evening, according to Michael Ragusa, who identified himself as the head of Giuliani’s security.

Ragusa said in a statement posted to X on Sunday that Giuliani’s vehicle “was struck from behind at high speed” on a highway on Saturday.

“He was transported to a nearby trauma center, where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg,” Ragusa said in a statement, which Giuliani’s social media accounts reposted.

Reached for further comment on Giuliani’s condition, Ragusa said in a statement that the former mayor was “in great spirits” and “fully alert and conscious.” Giuliani’s doctors are “pleased with his progress,” Ragusa added.

Ragusa also noted in a separate social media post that the car accident “was not a targeted attack.” He did not provide information to NBC News about whether a suspect was identified or in custody.

The former mayor’s son Andrew Giuliani acknowledged the incident in a post to X, thanking “all the people that have reached out since learning the news about my Father.”

“Your prayers mean the world. As a son, I can tell you I’m honored to have a Dad that I can call the toughest SOB I’ve ever seen!” he added.

Ted Goodman, who has served as a representative for Giuliani, did not immediately return NBC News’ request for further details about the incident.
