Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton suffered his first DNF with Ferrari after crashing out of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. Hamilton was chasing his former teammate George Russell on Lap 23 when he oversteered and crashed into the barrier.

The incident occurred at the exit of the banked corner at Turn 3 when light rain started to fall. Hamilton ran wide and spun out at the area where the banked corner levels. The front right section of his SF-25 F1 car suffered heavy damage, leading him to retire from the race.

The incident brought out the safety car, which provided all teams with the perfect opportunity to pit. Hamilton’s incident adds to the adaptation challenges he has been facing at Ferrari. The weekend at Zandvoort started off on a positive note for the Briton, who started the race from P7. He said after the Dutch Grand Prix qualifying session:

“I think this weekend, definitely, we’ve seen progress, and that was the goal. A better approach, and overall, just everything has been more enjoyable, so I’ve definitely enjoyed it. I think I got the most out of the car in pretty much every session.

“I think in that last lap, when I came out of Turn 1, I was already a tenth and a half down. I need to look into why, I can’t remember exactly. But then you’re on the back foot from then on.

“I think today, probably close to P5 would have been possible. With the wind and everything, it’s quite tricky for all of us.”

Addressing the pace of the dominant McLarens, the 40-year-old driver added:

“The McLarens are in another league. I think we’re obviously quite close to the cars that are around us. It’s a very difficult circuit to overtake on, so strategy is going to come into play.

“Hopefully, the rain can throw a bit of a spanner into the mix, and I’m going to maximise.”
