SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee will be hard-pressed to outdo his team’s debut season as part of the Atlantic Coast Conference as it gets back to business in 2025.
No. 16 SMU enters its sophomore season as part of the ACC, having done the unthinkable by becoming the first team of the national championship game era to reach a conference championship in its maiden year transitioning to the big leagues. The Mustangs finished top of the board in the 2024 regular season before losing out to Penn State in its first playoff game and finishing with an 11-3 record overall.
Southland Conference contender East Texas A&M is also in a state of transition as it embarks on the fourth and final year of its transformation into a Division I outfit. Third-year head coach Clint Dolezel guided the Lions to a 3–9 record in 2024, and he’ll view the early stretch of the season as an opportunity to make noise, especially with another ACC opponent, Florida State, looming just around the corner.
In that sense, all the pressure is on 47.5-point favorite SMU to back up its promise, and junior quarterback Kevin Jennings shoulders the burden of getting his side firing from the off. Lashlee is glad to have tight end R.J. Maryland back for one more year after he passed on the NFL Draft, while Jordan Hudson and Derrick McFall will be key figures at receiver and running back, respectively.
