The Boston Red Sox won the Alex Bregman sweepstakes last season, and it’s paid off in a huge way. Bregman has been a massive part of the Red Sox’s postseason push, but his contract has an opt-out clause in it, and there’s growing speculation that he could use that clause at the end of the season.
These rumors will likely only gain steam as the season comes to an end.
MLB’s Mark Feinsand recently suggested Bregman could opt out of his contract this offseason. This would ignite another sweepstakes to land the star infielder.
“Bregman inked a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox last February, though $60 million of that salary is deferred,” Feinsand wrote. “Although he’s played in only 85 games due to injuries, Bregman has played well (16 home runs, 53 RBIs, .922 OPS) when he’s been on the field. It’s unclear whether Bregman will find an AAV that high out there, so opting out might be risky, though many believe he will leverage the opt-out clause into a reworked, longer-term deal with Boston.”
If Bregman lands back in free agency, the Detroit Tigers might be as good a landing spot as any. The Tigers reportedly pursued Bregman last offseason, but couldn’t land him. With Detroit playing so well this year, it could be convinced that it’s one big piece away from a World Series.
At the end of the day, the Red Sox should be the favorites in another potential Bregman sweepstakes, but the Tigers could be a solid suitor, too. Don’t count out Detroit if the star opts out of his deal in a few months.
