Cubs Urged To Add $21 Million Veteran Hurler After Red Sox Release

The Chicago Cubs are in the hunt for the postseason with a World Series on their minds.

But before they get there, they could look to add some pitching to their depleted bullpen and starting rotation. The Cubs are in a perfect position to add somebody in the coming days.

Jordan Campbell of Cubbies Crib recently urged the Cubs to pursue free agent pitcher Walker Buehler after he was released by the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

“Suddenly, Buehler finds himself a free agent right before the deadline for postseason roster eligibility. Buehler must be signed by another team before September 1 if he is to be eligible to pitch for his new team in the postseason,” Campbell wrote. “Similar to Andrew Heaney, Buehler feels like the type of move Jed Hoyer may be circling this weekend. With Jameson Taillon struggling to stay healthy over the last two months, the Cubs’ potential postseason is beginning to show some warts.

“That is heightened by the fact that Matthew Boyd has struggled over his last two starts, and Cade Horton, as great as he has been, has exceeded his career-high in innings since being drafted by the Cubs. Depth is needed for the Cubs’ pitching staff, and Buehler could certainly help as a swing man, working between the bullpen and starting rotation.”

Buehler could be the perfect option for the Cubs if there’s mutual interest. He would likely sign for cheap and could be used as a spot starter or long reliever.

The righty has a lot of postseason experience with his October heroics being the main storyline of his World Series championship with the Los Angeles Dodgers a year ago.

If the Cubs want to add an arm, Buehler is a low-risk, high-reward option to look at.
