Fans hoping to see the “Mortal Kombat 2” film in 2025 will now be crushed. It has been announced that the sequel film has been with a brutal delay.

In an exclusive from Deadline, it has been revealed that “Mortal Kombat 2” will arrive May 15, 2026. The original film’s release was slated for Oct. 25, 2025.

Deadline also indicated that the film’s delay might likely be due to going against potential blockbuster films such as the Jeremy Allen White-led biopic about Bruce Springsteen, “Springsteen Deliver Me From Nowhere.”

Also, the report indicates that Halloween time is typically when box office films take a hit due to people engaging in spooky activities instead of hitting the theaters for a flick.

What makes the “Mortal Kombat 2” delay worse is the red band trailer had set a record with 107 million views, which is the most a red band trailer has been viewed in a 24-hour period. The promise of video game adaptation violence was not enough for the film to keep its release date.

“Mortal Kombat 2” follows a new format that focuses more on one of the most familiar Mortal Kombat characters, Johnny Cage. Played by fan-favorite actor Karl Urban, Cage now joins the likes of Sonia Blade, Raiden, and more to protect the Earth Realm.

What the red band trailer also showed was the same kind of violence that existed in the first film, but also the addition of well-known characters from the video game series. It will be interesting to see how the plot and action are portrayed in the sequel, as many of the criticisms of the first film were on the pacing and confusion of the story.

The full cast list is as follows:

Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, with Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion.

The full synopsis reads:

“In part two, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds-barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earth realm and its defenders.”
