Packers’ Next Move After Micah Parsons Trade is Super Obvious

The Green Bay Packers rocked the NFL world with a historic trade on Thursday, acquiring Micah Parsons in a deal with the Dallas Cowboys. Obviously, this is a massive move for the Packers that completely alters the league landscape. But is Green Bay done?

The Packers satisfied a major need by adding an elite pass rusher. That much is true. But they still have a significant hole at the cornerback position, which is why Green Bay now must sign Stephon Gilmore.

Clearly, the Packers are going all in. They were Super Bowl contenders before even landing Parsons. All they gave up in return in terms of player compensation was Kenny Clark, so they didn’t even really damage their roster to bag him. So imagine how much the arrow is now pointing north for Green Bay after this blockbuster?

For that reason, the Packers need to go for broke. Gilmore is somehow still available with Week 1 right around the corner. Green Bay needs a corner after releasing Jaire Alexander, and Nate Hobbs is currently recovering from a minor knee procedure. Gilmore is the best one on the market.

Is Gilmore the same dynamic force from his New England Patriots days? No, but he was still effective for the Minnesota Vikings last season, registering 56 tackles, an interception and nine passes defended. He also has tons of veteran experience and would provide a stable presence in the locker room.

Yes, Parsons makes the defense significantly better, but the Packers still cannot ignore the major problem they have in their secondary. Their safeties are good for sure, but you need solid cornerbacks — at the very least — to win in this pass-heavy modern NFL.

Gilmore would also not be very costly. Surely, the 34-year-old would be perfectly content signing an affordable one-year deal, much like he did with the Vikings last season. Green Bay would provide him with the opportunity to win another Super Bowl before he decides to call it quits on his career.

This really is a perfect match for both sides. The Packers need Gilmore, and Gilmore needs them. Green Bay is clearly being aggressive. General manager Brian Gutekunst has actually been criticized for being to passive in the past, but he appears to have turned a new leaf heading into 2025.

Taking those things into consideration, we should almost expect the Packers to make a move for a cornerback, and it might as well be Gilmore.
