The New York Mets swept the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field this week, and did it without Francisco Alvarez.
Alvarez has missed plenty of time this season and is currently on the injured list with a UCL sprain in his right thumb. The Mets sent him on a rehab assignment as he tries to play through the injury, which will reportedly need surgery, according to the New York Post’s Mike Puma.
While Alvarez was on the track to returning, he was hit by a pitch in his left hand during his first rehab start on Wednesday. He was removed from the game and now faces a new injury setback.
“After the Mets beat the Phillies 6-0 at Citi Field to complete a three-game sweep, manager Carlos Mendoza had little information other than Alvarez was receiving evaluation on his left pinky,” wrote Puma. “Alvarez started at catcher and went 1-for-2 before departing the game.”
Alvarez has played in just 56 games this year. He has a .265/.349/.438 slash line and seven home runs. He missed the start of the season after surgery on his hamate one. He also missed seven weeks last season for a torn UCL in his left thumb.
He has seen limited action this year thanks to his injuries, and will not be 100% when he returns if he is trying to play through an injury. Now, he is also potentially dealing with an injury in his other hand. Injuries in both hands are less than ideal for any player, let alone a catcher.
