Summary

  • NAAW Studio’s design for Six Coffee + Wine in Almaty unfolds like a journey from morning to night
  • Interiors showcase local shell limestone walls, marble inlays, tinted terrazzo floors and custon stained-glass windows

NAAW Studio’s vision for Six Coffee + Wine in Almaty, Kazakhstan, reimagines a neighborhood café as a fluid journey from dawn espresso to evening vintages. Anchored in the city’s architectural DNA, the design unfolds across five interconnected halls, each defined by a distinct color palette, lighting scheme and atmosphere that mirror the day’s passing hours. Custom shutters and gradient-hued stained glass – crafted in collaboration with artist Zhanel Shakhan – modulate natural light and reveal hidden miniature vignettes of the café within the glass, inviting patrons to linger and explore.

At the heart of the concept lies the revival of local materials through contemporary reinterpretation. Interior walls are clad in shell limestone salvaged from the same quarries that dress Almaty’s most iconic landmarks. This is accented with marble inlays and an undulating limestone bar counter that anchors the space. Terrazzo floors, tinted to echo the stone’s shell flecks, guide visitors deeper into the space, while a sculptural stainless-steel light fixture above the bar serves as both functional illumination and a striking focal artwork.

Six Coffee + Wine further celebrates Almaty’s artisanal community through bespoke furnishings and curated art installations. Travertine tables stand alongside ergonomic seating by Aq Objects, whose forms reference traditional yurt benches, while inflatable Plopp chairs introduce a playful material contrast. Gallery-style walls showcase photography by Bauyrzhan Sabit and a felt tapestry by Dunie, reinforcing the space’s tactile narrative. Finally, a gradient-clad corridor by local surfacing brand For Walls extends the spatial storytelling, ensuring every turn deepens the transition from morning to night.
