The Miami Dolphins lost running back Alexander Mattison for the season in their first preseason game. Along with injuries to De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright, the Dolphins had to address the injuries with minor acquisitions throughout camp.

The latest of which is bringing back a familiar face in Jeff Wilson Jr., who was just cut by the San Francisco 49ers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Wilson spent the last two full seasons and half of 2022 with the Dolphins, but with the emergence of Raheem Mostert and Achane, he was buried on the depth chart. After signing with the 49ers in the offseason, Wilson would only get 19 carries in the preseason and was not eye-catching with his scarce workload.

The 49ers chose to cut him on cut-down day, and the Dolphins, with a need in the running back room, decided to pick up their former running back. With familiarity with the offense, Wilson would be able to pick up quickly and be elevated for the Dolphins’ week one matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier is expecting Achane to be active for the matchup, according to Marcel Louis-Jacques. While coach Mike McDaniel believes Wright is not expected to be available, according to Louis-Jacques.

Wilson is searching for a thread to grab and continue his NFL career, and the Dolphins are a familiar organization with the need that could help him get signed off the practice squad if he were to be used in the first game of the season.
