Chaotic door cam footage of a woman and her friends joining forces to search for her missing cat in the middle of the night has gone viral online.
When Beckie Murphy, 24, returned to her mom’s house at 11:30 pm after a long day at Creamfields Festival, she wanted nothing more than to sleep. Unfortunately for Murphy (and her friends who were staying over), her cat Luna had other plans.
Luna is an indoor cat and stays within the confines of Murphy’s apartment in Manchester, UK. But while they were visiting her mom’s home, the 4-year-old feline took it upon herself to explore the neighborhood.
Luna normally greets her owner at the door when she returns home, but Murphy told Newsweek that she “knew something was up” when her cat was nowhere to be seen. She searched the house from top to bottom, but still nothing.
Cue the panic from her terrified owner.
Murphy said: “When I bring Luna to my mum’s, I always check all the windows are closed before I leave. But my mum has a cat flap in the conservatory, which is microchipped to her cat, Sooty. Him and Luna are like a tag team, and they get up to mischief, so I think Sooty put his head near the cat flap to open it, and then Luna made a run for it.”
Once it was clear that Luna wasn’t in the house, the search moved outside. Thankfully, Murphy had help, as her two friends scoured the area by her side (iPhone flashlights in hand). As they looked for Luna, some kids nearby had heard them calling her name and they even joined in.
But the trio wasn’t having any luck, so it was time to call in reinforcements.
“Luna is shy and would only ever listen to me and my ex-boyfriend, so I had to call him to help. He drove all the way from Manchester at 12 am to help,” Murphy continued.
The group searched for Luna for around three-and-a-half hours, looking everywhere they could think of until 3 am.
They weren’t able to find her that night, and Murphy eventually went to bed feeling worried and exhausted. She left the bedroom window open so she could hear Luna if she found her way back to the garden.
As it turned out, Murphy got a very special wakeup call at 6 am when Luna jumped onto the conservatory, right beneath the bedroom window.
“I jumped up and she saw me then jumped off, so I ran to the door and she came running towards me,” Murphy told Newsweek.
She continued: “I have no idea where she went. She’s only ever got out at my mum’s once before, and because she doesn’t know the area, she normally stays in the garden. But I think she must have gone on an adventure in the neighbor’s gardens.”
Once Luna was safe, Murphy couldn’t resist sharing the Ring doorbell footage from the night before. She posted it on TikTok (@beckiemurphy) showing the chaos as the group went back and forth in search of the cat, and it’s left internet users in hysterics. In just a matter of days, the video has amassed over 86,000 views and 4,700 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.
The next day, Luna slept for hours as Murphy joked that she must have been “so tired from her little adventure.”
Among the comments on TikTok, social media users can’t get enough of the footage, as many lauded Murphy for doing everything she could to find Luna.
One comment reads: “Your mums cat helping makes this 10x funnier, so funny.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “Omg that fact you all out looking is just perfection…. Good cat parents there.”
While another person joked: “Sorry but this is so funny, what a masterpiece you’ve put together. I would be hysterical though if that was me.”
