The Philadelphia Phillies have a loaded starting pitching rotation, but Ranger Suárez is set to enter free agency at the end of the season. With Andrew Painter banging on the door of the big league call-up, Suárez is likely headed elsewhere this winter.
Pair the addition of Painter with the lack of payroll flexibility for the Phillies, and it seems like Suárez will be in a new jersey next season.
MLB’s Mark Feinsand recently called the Toronto Blue Jays a potential landing spot for Phillies pitcher Ranger Suárez in free agency this offseason. Suárez is projected to sign for $158 million over six years, per Spotrac.
“An All-Star in 2024, Suárez opened this season in spectacular fashion, going 7-3 with a 2.15 ERA in 13 first-half starts,” Feinsand wrote. “He has struggled since the break (2-3, 5.86 ERA), but Suárez has posted a 3.63 ERA in four full seasons as a starting pitcher, providing solid work over that stretch. He may not be coveted by contenders as a No. 1, but Suárez should score a nice deal as a No. 2 or 3 starter.”
The Blue Jays need to add pitching as badly as anybody this offseason, and they have the money to make a huge splash like this.
Toronto will likely prioritize re-signing Bo Bichette to a massive deal, but if they can do so and still have the money for Suárez, this is a match made in heaven.
Toronto needs pitching, and Suárez is one of the best on the market. Adding the southpaw to the top of the rotation would be a huge boost for the Blue Jays in the loaded American League East.
