Verónica Echegui, the Spanish actress who starred in Apple TV+ series Love You to Death, Netflix‘s Intimacy and had a recurring role in Sky series Fortitude, has died. She was 42.

Antonio Banderas and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez were among those who paid tribute to Echegui, who died on Sunday after being diagnosed with cancer, per newspaper El País.

Born in Madrid in 1983, El País reported that few in the Spanish screen community were aware of Echegui’s illness.

Echegui, who won a Goya Award for her 2022 short film Tótem Loba, most recently featured in Love You to Death, which was picked up by Apple TV+ after originating on Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia TV.

Premiering on Apple in February, the series starred Echegui and Joan Amargós (Show Yourself) as a pair of friends who strike up an unlikely romance.

Echegui was perhaps best known for Fortitude, the Sky series that ran for three seasons and starred Dennis Quaid, Stanley Tucci, and Richard Dormer. The show launched on Participant Media’s cable channel Pivot in the U.S. in 2015 before moving to Amazon Prime Video.

Echegui also starred in Intimacy, the Netflix series that follows four women who walk the line that separates public and private life after a sexual video of a politician with a promising future is released.

Other credits include Book of Love, Sky’s romantic comedy co-starring Sam Claflin, which told the story of two writers thrown together on a book tour in Mexico. She also featured in Bunny and the Bull, the British indie starring Edward Hogg and Simon Farnaby.

“Today Spanish cinema is mourning the death of Veronica Echegui. My condolences,” Banderas said on Instagram. In a post on X/Twitter, Sánchez added: “I was deeply shocked by the news of Verónica Echegui’s passing, an actress with enormous talent and humility who leaves us far too young.”
