The Miami Dolphins have less than two weeks to find a kicker for the first quarter of their season.

Jason Sanders is expected to miss at least a month due to a hip injury, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday. One option for the Dolphins could be Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Ben Sauls after insider Tom Pelissero’s report from Monday afternoon.

“The Steelers informed kicker Ben Sauls they plan to waive him if they can’t trade him before Tuesday’s cutdown, per sources,” wrote Pelissero. “A former Pitt Panther, Sauls had a strong preseason, including going 4-of-4 on field goals Thursday night at Carolina.”

To put it simply, this is a player the Dolphins should be all over.

While Miami hopes Sanders will return in approximately 4-5 weeks, it’s not a guarantee. Hip injuries are one of the worst injuries for a kicker to experience, so there is a chance Sanders needs more time than originally estimated.

In addition to Sauls’ strong performance against the Carolina Panthers, he was perfect on his six extra point tries as well as 80% on field goals. His lone miss was in the second preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when he pushed a 43-yard field goal wide right.

Sauls may not be a perfect replacement for Sanders, but Miami won’t find a perfect replacement this close to the season starting. The Steelers and Dolphins have a strong history of trading with each other, even recently with the trade that saw Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick trade teams along with Jonnu Smith.

Miami wouldn’t have to give up much to acquire Sauls either as the Steelers don’t have much leverage in any trade negotiations.
