A woman was taken into custody after police say she drove off in a waiting ride-share vehicle and crashed Sunday night in Long Beach.
The vehicle was reported stolen shortly after 9 p.m. in the area of 2nd Street and Ravenna Drive.
Arriving officers discovered that an adult female had entered the driver’s seat of the waiting ride-share vehicle and fled the area before crashing into some parked cars a short distance away.
The unidentified suspect was taken into custody for vehicle theft and suspicion of DUI, a spokesperson for the Long Beach Police Department confirmed to KTLA.
Surveillance video showed the impact of the crash, which badly damaged a red Honda Civic Sport as it shoved the red hatchback into the vehicle in front of it.
The sound of the crash brought nearby residents out of their homes to see what had happened. “It sounded like an explosion,” said Michael Rosetti, who was barbequing when he heard the loud boom.
Airbags were deployed on the stolen vehicle, which had an Uber authorized vehicle sticker on the passenger side front windshield.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital in stable condition for evaluation and treatment, police said.
KTLA’s Nancy Fontan contributed to this report.
