The Pittsburgh Steelers were widely viewed as a potential landing spot for Shedeur Sanders’ brother, Shilo Sanders, during the NFL Draft. Some felt the Steelers could nab him with a Day 3 pick. However, Sanders went undrafted and was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Well, the Shilo-to-Pittsburgh rumors have now resurfaced, as the Buccaneers have waived Sanders following the safety being ejected from Tampa Bay’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills after throwing a punch.

Bleacher Report’s Joseph Zucker has tabbed the Steelers are one of the top three potential destinations for Sanders now that he is available, noting Pittsburgh’s need for depth in its secondary.
“During Colorado’s pro day in April, Sanders had a moment with Kelvin Fisher, a West Coast scout for the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Zucker wrote. “Pittsburgh traded star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick back to the Miami Dolphins in June. The team turned around and signed Chuck Clark a month later, having already added Juan Thornhill and undrafted free agent Sebastian Castro. Perhaps head coach Mike Tomlin is willing to give Sanders a shot in the hope of finding a young, long-term solution at the safety position.”
The Steelers could definitely afford to patch up the safety position. They did acquire cornerback Jalen Ramsey in the Fitzpatrick deal, but there is no doubt that their depth at safety is now very questionable.
Sanders is known for his impressive tackling ability, compensating for his rather lackluster skills in coverage. He registered 67 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a couple of fumble recoveries during his final season at Colorado in 2024.

The 25-year-old actually began his collegiate career at South Carolina in 2019, spending two years with the Gamecocks before transferring to Jackson State to play for his father, Deion Sanders, who became head coach of the team. Then, once Deion took the Colorado job, Shilo made the move to the Buffaloes in 2023.
We’ll see if the Steelers — or some other NFL team — decides to give Sanders a chance heading into 2025.
