The Ohio State Buckeyes and star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith are looking to make a run at repeating as national champions during the upcoming 2025 college football season.

After a dynamic freshman season, Smith is looking to take his game to another level. As a team, Ohio State has quite a few questions to answer.

Following the Buckeyes’ national championship run last season, the team lost a lot of talent. On both sides of the football, the program saw elite players take their talents to the NFL. That has led to lowered expectations for Ohio State in 2025.

One of the things that has set the Buckeyes apart in recent years has been their wide receiver talent. Ohio State has become known as “Wide Receiver U.”

Despite losing Emeka Egbuka to the NFL, Smith believes that the Buckeyes’ wide receiver room is better this season than last year.

Recently, Smith spoke out and did not hold back on Ohio State’s wide receivers.

“I feel like this year they are going to shock a lot of people, especially Carnell [Tate],” Smith said. “I mean that guy there, he can do any and everything you ask him to…he can do it all. Brandon [Inniss] is the same way, he’s got that dog in him. Our room is very special, I feel like it’s better than last year because we all can do different things.”

Looking closer at Smith, he is widely viewed as the best wide receiver in the nation. His numbers last season show why he’s viewed as such.

During his freshman year, the 6-foot-3 and 223-pound wideout caught 76 passes for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns. Many believe that he’s poised to produce even bigger numbers in 2025. However, some of that could depend on how Julian Sayin performs.

Sayin is taking over as the Buckeyes’ new starting quarterback. Will Howard finished his college career at Ohio State last season after transferring from Kansas State. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2025 NFL Draft.

It will be interesting to see if Smith’s warning about the wide receiver turns out to be accurate. He’s clearly very confident in the Buckeyes’ new-look offense. If he’s right, Ohio State could be in line to make another deep College Football Playoff run.
