The Minnesota Vikings shook up their quarterback room in a huge way that no one saw coming.

Minnesota plans to sign veteran and Super Bowl champion Carson Wentz after his weekend workout working with the team according to league sources. The move gives the Vikings a seasoned option behind first-year starter J.J. McCarthy, while sending a clear message that depth and experience is an underrated quality in the QB room in the NFL.

At the same time, the team has reportedly shipped Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles in a deal that caught many by surprise.

Howell and a 2026 sixth-round pick head to Philadelphia in exchange for a 2026 fifth-rounder and a 2027 seventh-rounder, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

For the Eagles, Howell becomes another layer of insurance behind Superbowl MVP Jalen Hurts, with Tanner McKeealso in the mix. For the Vikings, it signals a pivot away from a three-young-QB setup they have currently with guys like Max Brosmer and Brett Rypien, to more lean towards Wentz to be the primary backup who’s been a franchise guy, as a former starter with playoff experience.

It is a move that leaves the young quarterback McCarthy, as the centerpiece and the future but also has a great veteran behind him with Wentz as the safety net.

The Vikings just changed the script on their quarterback plan, and now the spotlight burns brighter on how fast McCarthy can grow with his new veteran tutelage.
