Angel Reese Hints at Major Roster Shakeup for Chicago Sky Next Season

When the Chicago Sky fired Teresa Weatherspoon and replaced her with Tyler Marsh, many believed he would be the head coach to take a roster of young, talented players and turn them into a playoff contender.

But with a little less than one-third of the season left, the Sky have actually taken a step back despite adding five-time All-Star and two-time WNBA champion Courtney Vandersloot and two-time All-Star and All-Defensive first-team selection Ariel Atkins to a roster that already featured Rookie of the Year runner-up Angel Reese and 2024 No. 3 overall pick Kamilla Cardoso.

Trading for Atkins looks even worse now considering they traded the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 draft to the Washington Mystics, who drafted All-Star rookie Sonia Citron, who’s averaging 15.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game and giving Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers a run for her money in the Rookie of the Year voting.

The Sky are just 9-27 and sit 12th out of 13 teams this season, and the team hasn’t won more than two consecutive games this year.

That regression may prompt some big changes for the second straight offseason—Chicago also parted ways with leading scorer Chennedy Carter after last year—something that was alluded to by Reese during an interview with Winsidr.

“I’m sure that all of us aren’t going to be on this team next year together,” Reese said. “So, I know we’ll lose some teammates, have some trades happen, it’s part of the game. So just enjoy each other, because I really did enjoy this team this year, and these players, and these vets.”

Angel Reese on the Sky’s goals for the final 9 games and her own mindset: “Just to play hard as hell these last nine games. We might not all be together next year—teammates could leave or trades could happen. That’s part of the game. So I just want to enjoy each other because I… pic.twitter.com/1Tr8b8trTs

To Reese’s point, Atkins, Vandersloot, Rebecca Allen, Kia Nurse, Michaela Onyenwere, Elizabeth Williams, Rachel Banham, and Sevgi Uzun will all be free agents next offseason, leaving just Reese, Cardoso, and rookies Hailey Van Lith and Maddy Westbeld as the only players under contract beyond 2025.

With so much roster uncertainty, Reese made it clear there’s only one thing the players who are guaranteed to be in Chicago next season can do.

“Just to play hard as hell these last nine games, give it your all — that’s all you got,” Reese added. “The game can be taken away from you at any time, so just maximize it.”
