Yankees Rumors: New York Urged To Cut Ties With Struggling $8 Million Pitcher

The New York Yankees made a lot of moves at the trade deadline to improve their roster. Specifically, the Yankees targeted bullpen help to improve their chance of winning the World Series.

The Yankees added three arms to their bullpen, largely because offseason addition Devin Williams has struggled tremendously this year.

Colin Keane of Yanks Go Yard recently suggested the Yankees wouldn’t look to sign Williams to a contract extension at the end of the season.

“New York’s trade for Williams back in December would be viewed as a disaster even if Cashman had given up close to nothing to acquire the closer. The emergence of Caleb Durbin has only added insult to injury in that regard.” Keane wrote. “To Cashman’s credit, he went out and got (David) Bednar before the deadline, a move which has already begun to heal the trauma of Williams’ ongoing Yankees stint.

“An extension for Williams would be the most surprising front office move in the history of Major League Baseball. Unless Cashman wants to etch his name in the record books while getting fired, he won’t be planning anything this winter for the soon-to-be free agent Williams.”

Williams has likely played himself out of the Bronx. There are a few teams in baseball who would likely offer the righty a one or two-year deal, but the Yankees likely want to move on from the former superstar.

New York brought in David Bednar to take over as the closer. There’s a chance he signs an extension in the offseason, too.

Either way, it seems like Williams’ time in New York is coming to a close.
