Jets Listed as Team That Should ‘Worry About Next Season’s Draft’

The New York Jets are one of the most puzzling teams to figure out for the upcoming NFL season.

Led by a new quarterback in Justin Fields and new head coach Aaron Glenn, the Jets will be looking to bounce back from a 5-12 season.

Some, though, don’t believe in the hype surrounding New York and believe it should turn its focus toward next year’s NFL Draft.

“The Jets are banking on two facts: Fields is only 26 years old with plenty of remaining growth potential, and his athleticism can continue to be a weapon in the meantime,” wrote Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski.

Sobleski made sure to note that just because New York signed Fields to a multi-year deal, it may be willing to move off him after just one season.

“The Jets understand their situation, hence why the organization didn’t go all in with their current quarterback. New York can release Fields next offseason, designate him as a June 1 cut and save $10 million of his $13 million salary-cap charge.”

Fields will make the third stop of his professional career in New York after stints with both the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers. He will be in charge of getting the Jets back to relevancy after the failed experiment of Aaron Rodgers at the helm.

If Woody Johnson does indeed decide to look ahead to next year’s draft for his franchise quarterback, he will have several options. Garrett Nussmeier, Cade Klubnik, LaNorris Sellers and Arch Manning could all be available for New York in the first round.

There is a world, though, where Fields leads the Jets to a 10-7 season and New York decided to stick with him for the foreseeable future and prioritize other assets in next year’s draft.
