CAMPTON, Ken. (KSNW) — A relaxing dip in a hot tub at a remote Kentucky cabin for a group of elderly women turned tragic, requiring an emergency rescue response.
It happened on Wednesday night near Campton, a small community located in the Appalachian Plateau of eastern Kentucky, approximately 60 miles east-southeast of Lexington. The Wolfe County Search & Rescue Team says a group of women in their 80s was staying at a remote cabin when they decided to relax in a hot tub.
The rescue team says the trouble began when they attempted to exit the tub. Two of the women were unable to get themselves out due to preexisting conditions.
They overheated and became unresponsive. One of the group got back into the hot tub to hold their heads above water while another called 911.
The caretakers of the cabin, along with the rescue team and the Wolfe County Sheriff’s office, responded. EMS was contacted, but was unable to respond immediately.
The caretakers were able to get the women out of the hot tub. One was partially responsive, while the other remained unconscious.
The unconscious woman was moved to a shower and cold water was used to cool her body. The second patient was moved outside, where a garden hose was used to help cool her down.
The Wolfe County Rescue Team reports that, after 20-30 minutes, the women regained full consciousness. Both women were transported to a local hospital for further treatment and observation.
The Wolfe County Search & Rescue Team says it’s a good reminder that you should always limit the amount of time spent in a hot tub and ensure you are capable of entering and exiting tubs independently.
