The New York Jets filled a major hole on their team by adding defensive tackle Harrison Phillips on Wednesday from the Minnesota Vikings.

The Jets knew had to address their defensive tackle needs ahead of the regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now that it’s done, Seth Walder of ESPN gave New York a “B” for the deal after giving up two late-round draft picks.

“The Jets surrendered two sixth-round picks and a seventh for Phillips, so they didn’t get him for nothing,” wrote Walder. “The Vikings are paying half of his $7.4 million salary, which matters. It’s a short-term move for the Jets but not necessarily a one-year deal. Phillips is under contract for $7.5 million in 2026 that could be worth it depending on how he plays this season. … I think it’s a fine trade for the Jets, considering their need.”

Minnesota paying half of Phillips’ salary helped make the deal possible as the Jets are working to improve as quickly as possible under head coach Aaron Glenn. He’ll help to bolster their run defense this season.

“He has been a top run defender at times; he ranked in the top 10 in run stop win rate among interior defenders in both 2021 and 2023, with respective rates of 41% and 42% in those seasons,” wrote Walder. “He dropped off in that category in 2024, posting an average 32% RSWR. He doesn’t give a ton as a pass rusher, though that’s Williams’ job on the Jets.”

The Jets are hoping Williams can come in and make a major impact on the defensive line after getting a fresh start.
