Conference USA chose not to do a preseason poll this year, but if it had, both of these teams would very likely be in the top four along with Jacksonville State and Liberty. This has a chance to be a huge game with major implications in the CUSA title race.
Both teams have players on the conference’s preseason watch list. For Sam Houston, those players are wide receiver Michael Phoenix II, offensive lineman James Dawn II, defensive lineman Zeiqui Lawton, defensive back Emon Allen, and kicker RJ Lopez. As for WKU, the players are quarterback Maverick McIvor, offensive lineman Marshall Jackson, defensive lineman Harper Holloman, defensive back Demarko Williams, and punter Cole Maynard.
Last season, Sam Houston went 10-3 overall and was 6-2 in Conference USA play, while Western Kentucky was 8-6 overall and 6-2 in conference games.
