A man opened fire on a bus near the Los Angeles International Airport on Friday night, shooting and killing a young woman, authorities say.
It happened around 10:45 p.m., according to the L.A. Police Department, near the intersection of Belford and Manchester Avenues in Westchester.
“A bus operator headed eastbound on Metro Bus Line 115 near LAX heard gunshots from the rear of the bus and immediately stopped, allowing all passengers to exit,” stated a spokesperson for the L.A. Metro.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a verbal altercation aboard the Metro Bus led to a 20-year-old man allegedly firing multiple rounds, striking an 18-year-old woman. It was not immediately clear whether the victim was the suspected gunman’s target.
The LAPD said the teenage victim was then transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
“Metro extends its sympathies to the victim’s family and friends and thanks the Los Angeles Fire and Police Departments for their prompt response,” the Metro spokesperson added.
Authorities did not immediately identify the suspect or the victim, and no arrests were announced as of Saturday morning.
The Los Angeles Police Department is leading the investigation into the incident and encourages anyone with information to call the LA Regional Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477).
