A pet-sitting platform’s recent study broke down, state by state, the most popular dog of 2025.
TrustedHousesitters gathered data from over 100,000 pets registered to the platform to find out the most popular names among cats and dogs in 2025. For both, Luna reigned supreme.
The top five most popular dog names this year included Luna, Bella, Lucy, Charlie and Daisy. But a map revealing the most popular dog names in each state showed some places are not following the popularity trend.
Only 12 states had Luna as the top dog name in 2025, in comparison to 21 states listing that name as the most popular for cats. Luna also jumped up from being the top dog name in only five states in 2023.
Although ranking third in popularity, the name Lucy took the top spot in 11 states. Another increase from 2023, where eight states ranked it as the top name.
Bella had five states, followed by Charlie and Maggie each with three. Other names earning a state’s most popular include Willow, Koa, Sadie, Rosie, Molly, Coco, Jack, Stella, Scout, Tucker, Lily, Cooper, Leo, Gracie, Ruby and Daisy.
Why Luna?
After diving into the data for most popular pet names, the moniker Luna stood out repeatedly. Even Spot Pet Insurance looked at the most common names registered and Luna topped the list with 3,449 female pets.
An article from Rover explained the name Luna, which comes from the Latin word for moon, likely sparked because of pop culture. For example, the cat in Sailor Moon is named Luna. Luna Lovegood, a character in Harry Potter, became a fan favorite.
Name Inspiration Trends
Books, music, movies and food continue to be a driving factor when it comes to pet parents picking out a name for their fur baby.
This year specifically, TrustedHousesitters found the name Percy gained in popularity by 570 percent since the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series aired on Disney+.
Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, the name Goose increased by 309 percent. Bruno also saw a 138 percent rise in popularity between 2023 and 2025, which the pet sitting platform believes could be to due to Disney‘s movie, Encanto.
The most popular pet name based on food was Olive, which came in at number 18 among dogs.
