The Philadelphia Phillies are going to be in a very tough spot in the offseason.
After failing to sign Kyle Schwarber to a contract extension before the season, the slugger has put together one of the more impressive offensive seasons of this generation. Now, Schwarber’s price tag has gone up and then some, leaving the Phillies to either pay a king’s ransom for him or be forced to watch him sign elsewhere.
As the days go by, it seems like more and more of a realistic possibility that he signs elsewhere.
MLB’s Mark Feinsand recently listed the Texas Rangers as a potential landing spot for the aforementioned Schwarber.
“Players entering their age-33 season don’t tend to find themselves this high on the list, but Schwarber is an exception. His plus power has him leading the NL with 45 home runs and 109 RBIs in 127 games, and he’s already set a career high in fWAR (4.2) with more than a month remaining in the season. Schwarber has the ability to play left field on occasion, but he’s essentially a full-time DH who will make any lineup better immediately upon arrival.”
The Rangers desperately need to add offense to their roster, and Schwarber would bring that and more. Adding the slugger to the roster would help put Texas back on the map after a few down years.
But the Phillies are likely willing to overpay for Schwarber. The slugger, alongside Bryce Harper, is seemingly the heart and soul of the team.
Losing Schwarber would be a crushing blow to the team and fan base, no matter what the cost is. At this point, the Phillies need to bring him back, even if it feels like an overpay.
