Falcons’ Kirk Cousins Linked to Trade Proposal That Could Send Him to Division Rival

The Atlanta Falcons are in an interesting situation as they are stuck in one of the NFL’s most bizarre quarterback logjams.

Kirk Cousins, who they signed to a massive multi year free-agent deal last year has already been pushed to the background after he struggled towards the end of last season and was replaced by Michael Penix Jr. who the team drafted in the first round.

Cousins, who was once expected to stabilize the Falcons’ high powered offense, looks more like an overpriced backup than a guy that was brought in to win games. The reality of their quarterback situation is fueling speculation that Atlanta could look to move him before the season gets underway.

Enter the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Kellen Moore hasn’t named a starter, with Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener all fighting for the job. The issue with all these guys is none of them are proven commodities.

The Saints’ quarterback room is loaded with question marks at the most important position in the sport. Making a move to secure a guy that has led playoff teams would be a smart move.

This solves the problem of both teams and potentially a perfect trade partner for Atlanta who has been linked to moving Cousins’ contract ever since Penix took over the starting job. By sending Cousins to New Orleans the Falcons could clear significant cap space and eliminate an awkward QB situation going forward and allow Penix to play without the circus throughout the season.

For the Saints, the deal would bring immediate stability and a proven veteran to a roster that otherwise lacks a clear leader under center.
It’s a rare scenario where a divisional trade could actually solve problems for both sides.

The Falcons are handing the keys to Penix without hesitation, while the Saints would finally have a quarterback they can trust to lead them since Drew Brees departure as they head into the 2025 season.

Should desperation meet opportunity, Cousins could find himself in a different city donning the black and gold before long.
