The San Francisco 49ers’ wide receiver room has been absolutely decimated by injuries this summer, marking the second straight year the 49ers have fallen victim to a rash of medical issues.
Brandon Aiyuk is recovering from a torn ACL. Jauan Jennings is nursing a calf injury. Several of San Francisco’s auxiliary options are hurt. And let’s not forget that the Niners parted ways with Deebo Samuel earlier this offseason.

Basically, the 49ers are very thin at the position, and swinging a trade for Kansas City Chiefs castoff Skyy Moore doesn’t do a whole lot to remedy the issue.
But because San Francisco is so desperate for bodies in its receiving corps, it could provide a rather surprising opportunity to a forgotten weapon: Robbie Chosen.
Formerly known as Robbie Anderson, Chosen was once a terrific deep threat for the New York Jets and then the Carolina Panthers, but over the last several years, his production has fallen off a cliff.
Now, however, Chosen seems to have a real chance to make the Niners’ roster, and Matt Barrows and Vic Tafur of The Athletic recently discussed the possibility.
“Chosen, 32, has a chance to crack the 49ers’ 53-man roster, thanks to a depleted receiver room, a new mindset and having a long-lost fan in 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan,” Barrows and Tafur wrote. “The last wide receiver spot is one of roughly seven position battles on the docket for Saturday night’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.”

Given all of the injuries, Chosen isn’t exactly facing stiff competition, but it would still be surprising to see the Temple product — who has amassed a grand total of five catches the last two seasons — make the roster of a presumed contender.
Chosen does have a 1,000-yard campaign under his belt, which he achieved with the Panthers back in 2020. Since then, though, he has registered 500 yards just once, which came the following year.
