Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle universe has only been growing since it was introduced to the world over 40 years ago. Through countless comics, video games, movies, memorabilia, and more — the franchise has captivated fans for years on end.

More news: Exclusive: TMNT Co-Creator Kevin Eastman Reflects on 40 Years of Turtle Power

Co-creator Kevin Eastman has always had a hand in the creation of multiple stories that have traversed the grand Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and he came back to the comics in grand style when he released “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.”

The dark story follows the life of the last living member of the Turtles, who goes on a quest to avenge his fallen family and defeat the evil Oroku Hiroto, the grandson of The Shredder.

The story itself was written in the late 1980s by Eastman and TMNT co-creator Peter Laird, and was updated alongside Tom Waltz.

“The Last Ronin” became a monster hit, leading to a prequel called “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin – Lost Years” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution,” both of which were written by Eastman and Waltz.

Now, the original story in the grand “Roninverse” has found a new digital home.

“The Last Ronin” has been readapted into the web comic formula by the groundbreaking platform WEBTOON. WEBTOON offers fans a chance to read comics with far more ease and comfort via the vertical scroll format.

Per the release for the launch:

“The Last Ronin’s launch on WEBTOON is part of a partnership with IDW to bring some of the publisher’s most popular franchises to WEBTOON in our vertical scroll format.”

“The Last Ronin” follows other hit IDW properties that have been added to the WEBTOON platform, including “Godzilla: Unnatural Disasters,” “Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees,” “They Called Us Enemy,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” and “Locke & Key.”

Fans who have never read “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin” can read the WEBTOON version starting on August 23 at 5 PM PST.

The first three episodes of the series will launch on the platform at that time, and follow a weekly release on Sundays. Five additional episodes will be released via Fast Pass (Fast Pass allows users to read episodes earlier than the standard release date by using Coins).

WEBTOON has provided exclusive images to Newseek Comics ahead of its release, which showcase the vertical scroll format, and can be seen below:

For fans who have not read this story, this is the perfect time to get into arguably the best Turtles story ever told. Starting August 23 at 5 PM, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes: The Last Ronin” will have its digital home on WEBTOON.
