MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Five High Schools throughout Morgan County will soon have weapon detection systems installed.

On August 14, The Morgan County School Board approved a bid of approximately $495,250 to purchase five Xtract One Gateway weapons detection systems.

“These systems represent a proactive step toward enhancing school security. By improving safety in a less intrusive way, the district aims to ensure that students feel secure in their learning environment and teachers feel confident in their ability to focus on instruction. The investment reflects the commitment of both the superintendent and the school board to make school safety a top priority. The district expects the installation of these systems to deter anyone from attempting to bring a weapon onto campus. Once installation at the five high schools is complete, the district plans to expand the systems to all middle and elementary schools, ensuring that every student across Morgan County Schools benefits from the same level of protection,” said Morgan County Schools District Safety Coordinator Josh Boyd.

Xtract One Gateway is an advanced, non-invasive weapons detection system that uses proprietary AI-powered sensors to classify objects as individuals walk through, rather than requiring metal detectors or item removal. It distinguishes threats like guns and knives from everyday items such as laptops and backpacks, allowing for high-throughput screening with minimal disruption.

Each system can scan up to 4,000 people per hour and is capable of identifying the exact location of a potential weapon.

If a threat is detected, the user interface shows the exact threat type and location. Students can walk through without removing items from their bags or pockets.

According to Morgan County Schools, there are plans to add weapon detection systems at every elementary and middle school within the county as well.

The weapon detection systems ae expected to be installed at every high school within the next 8-10 weeks.
