Target’s new CEO, Michael Fiddelke, is stepping into leadership amid scrutiny over the company’s direction on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

While Fiddelke has not directly addressed DEI in recent public remarks, his ascension follows a period of internal and external criticism regarding the company’s commitment to those values.

Newsweek contacted Target for more information via email.

Why It Matters

Target had previously positioned itself as a corporate leader on DEI, making public investments in inclusive marketing and internal equity initiatives. However, following intense conservative backlash to a 2023 Pride Month campaign and other in-store efforts, the company quietly scaled back its public-facing DEI efforts.

In the wake of rolling back its DEI efforts, Target saw a significant drop in its stock price and continued underperformance compared to rivals, including Walmart and Costco.

What To Know

Fiddelke’s appointment follows the abrupt resignation of Brian Cornell, Target’s longtime chief executive. Cornell’s departure came as the company struggled to manage the backlash over its DEI stance and ongoing consumer boycotts.

On August 20, Target announced that Fiddelke would take over as CEO, officially ending Cornell’s tenure.

Fiddelke, who has been with Target since 2003 and most recently served as chief financial officer, released a video introduction on LinkedIn on August 21. In it, he described his “deep love for this brand” and emphasized operational priorities, such as “making Target easier to shop and simpler to run.” He did not mention DEI directly.

Fiddelke’s focus appears to center on fundamental retail levers, such as supply chain optimization, store presentation and enhancing e-commerce efficiency.

Though he has yet to outline a specific DEI agenda, Fiddelke has previously praised the contributions of Don Liu, a former Target general counsel and vocal DEI advocate.

When Liu left the company, Fiddelke wrote on LinkedIn: “Target is a stronger company because of you, Don. Congratulations on this incredible career milestone and all the best to you and your family!”

What People Are Saying

Michael Fiddelke, Target’s new CEO, wrote on LinkedIn: “During my time at Target, I’ve had the chance to learn from incredible leaders, work alongside amazingly talented teams and develop a fierce love for this company and the special role it holds in our guests’ lives. That’s why I am honored and excited to be named Target’s next CEO.

“Getting Target back to growth is my top priority. We’ll need to operate differently, move with urgency and focus, and make bold choices to get there. We have the foundation to build new momentum, and I’m eager to accelerate work already underway and find new ways to deliver the incredible products and experiences our guests expect from us.

“Thank you to the many mentors, peers, friends, and family—and especially Brian Cornell, for his steady leadership, support, and laying the groundwork for our future success. I’m excited for what’s ahead and proud to be taking this step forward with the best team in retail.”

What Happens Next

So far, Fiddelke has prioritized retail logistics. It remains to be seen whether he will publicly redefine Target’s DEI position.
