The New York Mets’ fanbase already knows that they could lose Pete Alonso in free agency. However, they could also lose another star via trade.

Jeff McNeil has been with the Mets since 2018. He is a two-time All-Star, batting champion and Silver Slugger. However, MLB insider Jon Heyman suggested the Mets could trade him to promote their No. 2 prospect Jett Williams.

“With 2B/SS/CF Jett Williams on the cusp, they could consider moving McNeil, who raised his value by regaining his stroke and showing versatility,” wrote Heyman.

McNeil had a down year last year, but has reestablished his trade value. He is slashing .259/.351/.444. However, this month he has a .299 average. Not only has his bat been an asset for the Mets, but his versatile defense has helped stabilize the outfield.

McNeil has played both second base and in the outfield this season for the Mets. He signed a four-year, $50 million deal in 2023. He has one more year and a club option remaining on his deal.

McNeil is 33, and the Mets may want to capitalize while his value is high. Williams is in Triple-A and could be ready to contribute by the start of next season. Like McNeil, he can play multiple positions.

Losing McNeil would be tough for fans to stomach, but many teams would be willing to acquire his bat, glove and relatively cheap contract. His club option for 2027 is just upwards of $15 million. The Mets should be able to get a decent return if they move him.
