One of NASCAR‘s prominent figures, Humpy Wheeler, passed away on August 20 at the age of 86. He was known for his contributions to the sport, best remembered as Charlotte Motor Speedway‘s president and general manager. He was a National Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee and won the 2026 NASCAR Hall of Fame Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR.

Based out of Belmont, North Carolina, Wheeler began his career in 1975, which spanned 33 years until his retirement in 2008. Charlotte went through a great transformation under his leadership, becoming one of the most favored racing destinations.

One notable development at the 1.5-mile superspeedway under Wheeler was the installation of a game-changing lighting system, which paved the way to NASCAR’s first night race. The move inspired other circuits to follow suit. The venue was also the first to adopt track condominiums with Wheeler at the helm, a first for NASCAR.

Charlotte underwent rebranding in 1999, all thanks to Wheeler’s revolutionary efforts in securing sponsorship from Lowe’s, which became a model of success in motorsports. The superspeedway was called Lowe’s Motor Speedway for ten years until 2009. Charlotte Motor Speedway released a statement on Humpy’s passing, which reads:

“Charlotte Motor Speedway was blessed to have a leader in Humpy Wheeler who can only be described as one of a kind. For more than 30 years, Humpy was a promoter’s promoter… establishing the famed 1.5-mile superspeedway as not only the most innovative facility in NASCAR for fan, partner and competitor amenities, but also one of the most progressive in all of sports.”

NASCAR CEO and Chairman Jim France said:

“Humpy Wheeler was a visionary whose name became synonymous with promotion and innovation in our sport. During his decades leading Charlotte Motor Speedway, Humpy transformed the fan experience through his creativity, bold ideas, and tireless passion.

“His efforts helped expand NASCAR’s national footprint, cement Charlotte as a must-visit racing and entertainment complex and recently earned him the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s prestigious Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR. On behalf of NASCAR and the France family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Wheeler family and all who were touched by his remarkable life and legacy.”

NASCAR Hall of Fame Director Winston Kelley added:

“Humpy’s contributions to and accomplishments in NASCAR are without parallel. The breadth and depth of his legacy, and those whom he influenced, assisted and mentored, cannot be overstated.”

Our thoughts are with Humpy Wheeler’s family at this difficult time.
