A pedestrian was killed when he was struck by the wheels of a semi-truck trailer that rolled onto a sidewalk in Long Beach Wednesday night, police said.
Police were called to the area of Oregon Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway shortly after 8 p.m. regarding a person down.
The victim was found on the southwest sidewalk of the intersection and rushed by ambulance to a local hospital in critical condition, the Long Beach Police Department stated in a news release.
The unidentified man was pronounced dead despite the responders’ and hospital staff’s lifesaving efforts, police said.
Investigators believe the big rig was turning southbound onto Oregon Avenue from eastbound PCH with a fully loaded trailer when it hit the victim.
“During the turn, the rear tires of the trailer rolled onto the sidewalk and struck the victim, who appeared to have been sleeping on the sidewalk,” police said.
The driver continued driving southbound on Oregon Avenue following the collision.
“At this time, neither speed, distracted driving, nor impaired driving are believed to be contributing factors in the collision,” police said.
It was unclear if the driver knew he had struck the victim before leaving the scene. Police did not describe the incident as a hit-and-run.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision was asked to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Joseph Johnson at 562-570-7355. Those who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or go to the lacrimestoppers.org website.
