President Donald Trump’s electoral coalition is falling to pieces and one blunder is to blame, Vice President JD Vance’s former adviser Sohrab Ahmari argued Thursday.
“Well, it was nice while it lasted,” Ahmari wrote for UnHerd. “Beginning in 2016, Donald Trump won over large shares of working- and lower-middle-class Americans to the GOP” — and that ultimately blossomed into a coalition that won the 2024 election as well. “But now a re-realignment may be afoot.”
A recent poll done by Siena College for The New York Times, Ahmari noted, indicated “that nearly two-thirds of Americans earning less than $50,000 a year intend to vote for a Democratic nominee in the upcoming midterm election, while only about a third support a GOP nominee. If these numbers hold once voters actually head to the polls, they could spell serious trouble for the President and his party.”
“Already, the smart money is on Democrats easily clinching the House of Representatives,” he said.
But numbers like this could also mean Democrats sweep the competitive Senate races and gain a majority there too, he argued.
“Working-class mistrust of the Democrats is deep and will not easily heal,” wrote Ahmari. “Beginning with Bill Clinton, the party abandoned its New Deal traditions and came to serve as a vehicle for the professional classes and the progressive wing of capital: haughty, censorious, committed to corporate globalization and exotic cultural causes.”
Ahmari argued that voters don’t need to vote blue to hurt Republican chances, as no-shows would be “devastating enough” for the party’s prospects.
Trump’s team, said Ahmari, was warned not to go into Iran, and warned that it would be seen by many of his voters as rank betrayal, since it’s exactly what he ran against, with even figures like Stephen Miller attacking former Vice President Kamala Harris for “leaning all in on starting many new bloody wars in the Middle East.”
“Promises made, promises not kept — working-class support lost,” he concluded.
