Summary

  • Kurono Tokyo unveils the Vermilion Chronograph “Shu” limited-edition watch featuring an orange-red dial
  • UV testing ensured long-lasting color using selenium red and vermilion pigments
  • It’s available for in-person purchase only at Kurono Tokyo’s physical salons

Following the Jubilee Sensu EOL “Shiraai,” released in celebration of founder Hajime Asaoka’s 60th birthday, Japanese independent watchmaker Kurono Tokyo now turns its attention to another standout creation: the Vermilion Chronograph “Shu.”

Distinguished by its vivid orange-red dial, the watch takes its name and inspiration from the Japanese character “朱” (shu), a color historically associated with nobility, good fortune and protection. The hue draws on deep cultural references, from the iconic torii gates of Shinto shrines to traditional urushi lacquerware and samurai armor. Achieving this exact tone required extensive ultraviolet exposure testing — a process Asaoka likens to more than a decade of real-world wear. Only two pigments, selenium red and vermilion, met the brand’s stringent fade-resistance standards, ensuring the color’s brilliance endures over time. The result is a chronograph that is instantly recognizable, blending technical precision with a striking visual identity.

Housed in a slim, elegant 38mm case, the Vermilion Chronograph “Shu” is accented by black subdials and tachymeter scales for enhanced contrast and legibility. This small-batch release will be available exclusively in person at Kurono Tokyo’s physical salons, launching August 22 at a retail price of ¥598,950 JPY (approx. $4,058 USD). For more information, visit the brand’s official website.
