Dez Bryant might be a former foe of the Philadelphia Eagles, but the one-time Dallas Cowboys receiver is not shying away from his positive opinion of his ex-rival.

Recently, the Eagles made a trade to acquire the Houston Texans’ wide receiver John Metchie. As one NFL fan attempted to downplay the acquisition, considering Metchie a player who “hasn’t been good in the NFL,” Bryant came to defend Philadelphia’s new acquisition.

“You clearly don’t know football,” Bryant said on social media.

“Metchie been in unfortunate situations that had nothing to do with his play.. health issues and emerging WRs in Houston,” he added.

At Alabama, Metchie was a star wideout during his sophomore and junior seasons. In total, he appeared in 30 games and caught 155 passes for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Entering the NFL in 2022, Metchie was selected with the 44th overall pick. The Houston Texans’ second-rounder missed his entire rookie season due to health concerns. The following year, Metchie returned to the field to participate in his debut season with the Texans.

Throughout his first two seasons, Metchie appeared in 29 games. He didn’t start at all. Metchie caught 40 passes for 415 yards and one touchdown. For a second-rounder, Metchie’s production hasn’t matched his draft slot. But a former wideout like Bryant doesn’t believe that he should be considered a bad player.

Bryant believes the Eagles won the trade by a wide margin.

“Eagles clearly got a steal,” Bryant continued. “He’s familiar with Hurts and Smith…Eagles really out here playing MUT in real life…”

Metchie won’t come in and challenge the top two wideouts, as AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith have been among the top wide receiver duos for the past few seasons. Last year, Brown accounted for 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games of action.

In the same number of games, Smith caught 68 passes for 833 yards and scored a career-high eight touchdowns. It was a stellar fourth season for Smith, despite the fact that he posted his career low in total yards.

It’s unclear what Metchie’s role will be for the Eagles in 2025, but Bryant clearly believes the Eagles landed themselves a valuable wideout, in exchange for Harrison Bryant and a future fifth-round pick.
