COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A Colbert County Student told administrators that he forgot to take a firearm out of his vehicle following a fishing trip.

According to Colbert County Schools Officials, the incident took place at Colbert Heights High School on Tuesday afternoon.

CCS told News 19 that the student admitted to administrators and the School Resource Officer that he had forgotten to remove a .410 Snake Charmer from his vehicle after a recent fishing trip.

After speaking with administrators, the student directed administrators to the vehicle to show them where the firearm was located.

Colbert County Schools said that the unloaded firearm was turned over to law enforcement around 2 p.m.

Colbert County Schools provided the following statement regarding the incident:

“There was no threat or intent to harm anyone. There is no ongoing safety issue moving forward. Again, the student is the one who notified administration and the resource officer.

Even though this was a mistake on the part of the student, the presence of this firearm on campus is a violation of Colbert County Schools police and state law.

All protocols and policies are being followed. School administration and the school resource officer worked quickly to determine the facts and ensure the safety of all individuals on campus.

As always, the safety of our students and open lines of communication are the top priorities of Colbert County Schools and Colbert Heights High School.”

– Colbert County Schools Superintendent, Nathan Fuller
