Summary

  • Apple is reportedly expanding iPhone production to India for the U.S. market
  • This marks a historic first for the company and a major shift in its global supply chain
  • The move is a strategic effort to diversify production away from China

In a historic shift in its global supply chain, Apple is reportedly expanding its iPhone production to India to fulfill the majority of demand for its latest models in the United States. This marks the first time in history that all new variations of the upcoming iPhone 17, including the premium Pro models, will be manufactured in India from the start for a major Western market.

The move is a strategic pivot for Apple, driven by a desire to reduce its reliance on China and to mitigate the potential impact of tariffs and geopolitical tensions. According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple has significantly ramped up its production in five Indian factories, including new plants operated by the Tata Group and Foxconn Technology Group. This expansion has already led to a surge in iPhone exports from India, with the U.S. becoming the country’s primary export destination.

This change is not just about avoiding potential tariffs; it is a long-term strategy to diversify Apple’s manufacturing footprint. The shift has delivered substantial results, with India’s iPhone exports surging to $7.5 billion USD in just the four months beginning April, nearly half of the previous fiscal year’s total. This move solidifies India’s role as a major hub in Apple’s global production ecosystem, signaling a new era for both the company and the country’s manufacturing sector.
