The New Orleans Saints definitely have quite the conundrum on their hands when it comes to their quarterback situation heading into the 2025 NFL season.

Last year, the Saints drafted Spencer Rattler in the fifth round. They then selected Tyler Shough in Round 2 this past April. Following Derek Carr’s injury and sudden retirement, one of them will have to start Week 1.

Or will they?

Former NFL quarterback Danny Kanell feels that New Orleans may seek a trade to upgrade the position, adding that the Saints may have the worst signal-caller situation in football right now.

“And you just feel bad for Kellen Moore and the rest of the team if this is who they’re rolling out there,” Kanell said. “So I do wonder if they’re making some phone calls looking to upgrade this position which might be the worst quarterback room in the entire NFL.”

Rattler is a former top collegiate prospect whose draft stock plummeted late in his NCAA career. He ended up making seven appearances and six starts for the Saints in 2024, throwing for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 57 percent of his passes. Not great.

Meanwhile, Shough was viewed as one of the most NFL-ready quarterbacks of this year’s draft class due to the fact that he actually spent seven years in college, playing for three different schools. He is also already 25 years old and has a birthday in September. However, he hasn’t looked great in preseason.

The problem is that there aren’t really many enticing quarterback options available at this stage of the offseason. Perhaps New Orleans can pluck someone like Kenny Pickett away from the Cleveland Browns, but how much of an upgrade would he actually be, realistically speaking?

The Saints may be better off seeing what one of Rattler or Shough has this fall and then potentially re-adjusting in the 2026 NFL Draft, which is sure to be teeming with quarterback talent.
