During training camp, Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin requested a trade amid failed ongoing contract extension talks. While the front office has shown no willingness to move him, they could part ways with another homegrown talent in the very near future.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that the Commanders are listening to offers for running back Brian Robinson. He’s spent the last three years with the organization after being drafted in the third round, serving as the team’s primary back for the majority of that time.

With this development just recently going public, there is no telling what kind of market has formed for Robinson. That said, if a reasonable return doesn’t surface soon, the Commanders’ running back could suffer a different fate ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Commanders could cut Brian Robinson if a trade doesn’t materialize

On Monday night, the Commanders continued their preseason schedule with a matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. While most of the team was in uniform, Robinson was among the notable absentees alongside McLaurin.

Neither player was even in attendance for the game amid their current situations with the organization.

While diving into the Robinson trade rumors, ESPN’s John Keim provided new insights on the situation. He reported that if a trade doesn’t happen soon, the front office could cut him.

“The Commanders could end up trying to trade Robinson over the next several days, one league source said,” Keim wrote. “If they don’t find a suitor, Washington could end up cutting Robinson, its primary back the past three seasons.”

Robinson appeared in 41 games for the Commanders in his first three seasons, totaling 2,329 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in that time. In the event he is out of the picture to start the season, Austin Ekeler is likely to take the top spot on Washington’s depth chart.

One person who isn’t fazed by this potential change just weeks before the season is offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. While speaking with the media after practice last week, he expressed his openness of doing things by committee in the backfield.

“All six or seven guys in there have a place in this league,” offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said recently, per ESPN. “They all have dynamic traits, all have things to do really well and guys when they had their opportunity have played at a high level. It’s a deep group and we just got to see how it shakes out.”

Based on these new developments, it appears that Robinson likely played his final game as a member of the Commanders.
