Two of the four gunmen who opened fire at a Brooklyn bar early Sunday morning were killed during the shootout, which also killed another man and injured 14 others, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on Monday.

One of the gunmen, Marvin St. Louis, 19, fired at Jamel Childs, 35, after the two confronted each other at the Taste of City Lounge, Commissioner Tisch said.

Mr. Childs shot back and two other men immediately began shooting, leading to terror and chaos in the Crown Heights bar, where patrons dived to the ground or ran for the exits to escape the gunfire.

Both Mr. St. Louis and Mr. Childs were killed, as was Amadou Diallo, 27, of Manhattan, a patron who was caught in the crossfire and had nothing to do with the conflict, the police said.

Commissioner Tisch, who on Sunday said the attack was gang-related, said detectives were still looking for the two other gunmen and were studying the 42 shell casings left inside and outside the bar for clues. The police said the shooters used 9-millimeter and .45-caliber firearms.

Mr. Childs was a member of a gang called Folk Nation, Commissioner Tisch said, adding that it “terrorizes Brooklyn and is responsible for at least a half a dozen shootings so far this year.” Commissioner Tisch said. The police said Mr. St. Louis was a member of a rival gang.

Three people who were injured in the shooting and survived are also associated with the gang, she said.

Eight men and three women were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds after the shooting, the police said, while three additional victims, all of them men, went to the hospital later on Sunday and on Monday for treatment. All 14 were expected to survive, the police said.

The 71st Precinct, which includes the block where the shooting occurred, saw three shootings between the start of the year and Aug. 10, compared with eight during the same period last year.

But neighbors said the bar was a magnet for trouble. In November, a 39-year-old man was charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a 28-year-old outside.

“The safety and well-being of our guests and community has always been our top priority,” the restaurant said in a statement posted to social media Sunday.

Maria Cramer is a Times reporter covering the New York Police Department and crime in the city and surrounding areas.
